How are traditions and collective norms giving way to personal choice and lifestyle diversity in contemporary society?
For this year’s spring course, we invited Jane Dewhurst, a Gymnasium teacher of English and Lektorin at the University of Zürich, to work with us on high-level language and sociology-informed content in this area. Jane designed and delivered a fascinating course entitled ‘Teaching the 'Me' Generation?’, with a carefully-placed final question mark to invite engagement and discussion.
In a range of activities and social settings, we considered how shifting values, identities and life choices shape the way today’s students learn, think and relate to authority. Jane created a discussion space that was welcoming, energised and exciting. A practical classroom design task undertaken in groups rounded the session off.
Participants enjoyed the mix of cognitive challenge and lively exchange, and appreciated Jane’s warmth and humour as well as her expertise in fielding all our many questions and comments.
As is by now SATE tradition, we concluded the evening with a trip to the pub to continue our conversations!
